Minimalist Shelters

Carry less with these weight-saving tents and tarps. BY AMY JURRIES

Why we like it The tarp packs down smaller than your Nalgene bottle. What you get A basic, 9.4-by-10-foot rectangular tarp that can sleep two and a removable bugproof canopy (each sold separately)

EASE OF SETUP Aluminum grommets hold the tip of each trekking pole firmly in place, while the pre-attached guylines have locking adjusters to help get a taut pitch. Bummer: This tarp only has six guyout points, so you’re limited to just a few variations on the A-frame.

LIVABILITY The tarp alone, with 79 square feet of real estate in a modified A-frame pitch, was plenty roomy for two with gear at either end. In tent mode, double doors and a 33-square-foot floor also provided comfortable living for two. Front and rear guylines add stability and increase headroom around the 43.3-inch peak.

PROTECTION The bug netting proved worth its scant weight—and not just for mosquitoes. “I appreciated the bathtub floor when sleeping in the rattlesnake and scorpion country of Southern California,”our PCT tester said. Fully seam-taped, the PU-coated, silnylon tarp kept testers dry through light rain. The flared shape at the base helps direct rain toward the guylines. Ding: With no guyout points along the arced sides of the tarp’s edges, rain snuck underneath during a big storm in the Sierras.
